A Marathon Effort

We originally did not have Rome on our bucket list. Then Liz announced that she had entered her 1st marathon to celebrate turning 30. We weren't going to miss such an auspicious occasion and amended our plans accordingly. 

Today was Marathon Day!

The only difficulty we had to work around was trying to synchronise our vantage points to allow us to get to each one before Liz powered through. 
In the end we managed to see her near the start at 2km, then 14km, 25km, 37km, and 42km.

The atmosphere was amazing, with supporters lining the course cheering on random strangers as they waited for their friends and family to come through. 

Even the Italian Airforce got into the act:



Every time we saw Liz there was a big smile and an apparent relaxed gait. 
Unknown to us, Liz had actually pulled a thigh muscle. Did it stop her? No!

What was even more awe inspiring wasn't just that she kept going, it was that she even started in the first place - she pulled it at the 1km mark for some totally unknown reason. Yes, 1km.

Liz then ran a further 41.2 km with a stiff and sore leg, and always a big smile on her face. Liz earned her medal! 
We are incredibly proud. Today is her day!

Mary nicely summed up our Saudi Arabia experience as "Expect the unexpected". Australian Wooden Boat Festival 2023

The Weather Gods smiled on us today for a fine day as we explored the Wooden Boat Festival. First stop was Salamanca Market for new hats, then we hit the docks for beautiful boats - big and small; new and old; human, wind, and engine powered. An emu stopped by to ensure our new hats were not reincarnations of their cousin who disappeared in mysterious circumstances...  A reminder that the local First Nation residents managed maritime adventure without the need for European technology. Mary wants to buy this boat, given the auspicious name... ... but felt it needed a better tender than Winnie the Tinny. Another auspicious boat name Personally, I think this would suit better. Beautiful to the point of being boat porn. Tomorrow will be a dinner cruise on a tall ship, complete with fireworks and a chance to climb the 35m tall mast. In summary, retirement has started well!

New York, New York

To all intents and purposes, New York and Manhattan Island are pretty much one and the same. The contrast having come from Grand Abaco Island in the Bahamas couldn't be greater. Apart from the obvious numbers of people and buildings, the people seemed more hard-nosed than elsewhere in the US.  One example: A huge part of New York's history is linked to the waterfront so what better way to start our visit than a boat tour circumnavigating the island? Only we couldn't. One of the storms that skirted the Bahamas turned up instead off the US East Coast. One of the features of such storms are unexpectedly high tides, and the captain decided that we probably wouldn't fit under the lowest bridge.  The Tour Guide, Dave, carefully explained this problem before we set off and offered that anyone who really wanted to fully circumnavigate could rebook the next day at low tide.
