Lay day in Launceston

A lazy day today, mostly pottering around.

After completion of a range of chores, naturally we turned to a pleasant beverage to round off the day. 

Which should have been simple.... 

First, the beer in Richard's fridge had frozen, due to a faulty thermostat presumably.

Then I made G&T's for Richard and Mary, only to find that I had used soda water instead of tonic.

I then located the correct bottles, only to discover that the twist tops would not budge!
Finally Fiona opened a bottle of sparkling wine only for the contents to follow the cork out of the bottle in a spectacular geyser.

I never expected to have a drinking problem....

Mary nicely summed up our Saudi Arabia experience as "Expect the unexpected". Put simply, we had some preconceived expectations, based in part on media reports and in part on comments made by friends on learning where we were going. None of those preconceived expectations matched our reality.  Since 2016, Saudi Arabia has gone through an amazing transformation as part of the Crown Prince's 'Vision 2030' . Australian Wooden Boat Festival 2023

The Weather Gods smiled on us today for a fine day as we explored the Wooden Boat Festival. First stop was Salamanca Market for new hats, then we hit the docks for beautiful boats - big and small; new and old; human, wind, and engine powered. An emu stopped by to ensure our new hats were not reincarnations of their cousin who disappeared in mysterious circumstances...  A reminder that the local First Nation residents managed maritime adventure without the need for European technology. Mary wants to buy this boat, given the auspicious name... ... but felt it needed a better tender than Winnie the Tinny. Another auspicious boat name Personally, I think this would suit better. Beautiful to the point of being boat porn. Tomorrow will be a dinner cruise on a tall ship, complete with fireworks and a chance to climb the 35m tall mast. In summary, retirement has started well!

Tall Ships

An easy start Sunday 12th Feb with a swim and a walk along a pristine beach, one to rival Orewa.  The main event today was a dinner cruise on the tall ship Soren Larsen culminating in viewing a fireworks display from the water. The voyage started auspiciously with an aerobatic display by the Air Force. So far, so good...  After boarding our tall ship, we moved forward for the briefing. While waiting for our skipper, we looked starboard to watch the James Craig, a tall ship almost twice our size, coming in from a cruise with the aid of a tug boat, a grand sight as one would expect. I suddenly thought 'They're coming in too fast and too shallow an angle and therefore are going to hit us'. I then thought, 'Don't be an idiot. These are professional skippers who know exactly what they're doing, aided by professional crews. What would you know... '.
